Department of Earth Sciences

HOD's Message

Dr. Zahid Bhatti – HoD – Earth Sciences

It is my pleasure to be a part of Abbottabad University of Sciences and Technology (AUST), which is newly established but fast growing university. The AUST is lying at the base of World’s youngest and unique mountains system “Himalayas”. The unique geographic location of the Department of Earth Sciences at AUST would provide an opportunity to learn about the geological processes in a real-time active mountainous setting. AUST is located at an ideal place, on the foothills of the Himalaya having an easy access to Karakoram, Himalayas and Hindu Kush Ranges in the north, Salt and Trans-Indus Ranges in the south. As an Earth Scientist, one may be involved in search of hydrocarbons, minerals, and water resources. S/he may also be engaged in the remediation of environmental hazards, and prevention and/or prediction of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, erosion and floods. A good reason to choose Earth Sciences as an academic program in Abbottabad is the opportunity it provides for outdoor academic learning and research that combines field work with the latest in technology for studies related to the earth on which we live.

Earth or Geological sciences are the sciences that study Earth, its physical and chemical composition and its history, including Earth’s Evolution within the solar system. Earth Scientists are particularly interested in the geological processes that have shaped our planet and will continue to modify it in the future. In addition to understanding the way Earth works and its relation to the solar system, Earth Scientists are involved in the search for energy, minerals and water resources, the evaluation and remediation of environmental hazards, and the prevention and/or prediction of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, erosion and floods.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Bachelors (Earth Sciences)

Earth science is the broadest in scope among the natural sciences. Rock (land), ocean, air and living organisms interact through physical, chemical and biological processes that move materials and energy on the Earth. This subject, thus, gives full understanding of the natural world we live in.
