Zoology is the study of animals, their behavior, physiology, genetics and evolution, as well as their interactions with each other and their environment. Zoologists study how animals evolved and the impact of environmental change on their survival. They also study costs and benefits of conservation and ways to enhance species survival. Zoology is home to a thriving community of researchers who share a fascination in how whole organisms develop, function, behave, interact and evolve. Our work bridges different levels of organization from the cellular basis of animal form, function and behavior to the interactions between organisms, people and policy. The Department is committed to the production of all-rounded international standard graduates of BS(Hon), M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. level in areas of Zoology including, Entomology, Parasitology, Environmental biology, Wildlife, Fisheries, Biotechnology and Nano biotechnology maintaining high level of integrity and responsibility at individual and departmental level; and conducting quality research, and producing well trained teachers and to participate in community base development. A graduate degree in Zoology opens a vast range of career opportunities in the field such as Teaching and Research, Forensics, Forest Services, Administrative Services, including working as zoo curators, museum curators, animal and wildlife educators, wildlife rehabilitators and conservationists, Research project assistants and in higher specialized studies. The career opportunities for a post graduate in Zoology are limitless. Some of the employment areas which provide huge openings for the M.Sc. Zoology candidates are medical laboratories, wildlife rehabilitation centers, fish hatcheries, agricultural departments, museum services, conservation agencies, scientific civil services, environment or ecosystem management sector, environmental consulting firms, and so on. In addition, there are numerous opportunities in the field of research in Pakistan and abroad.
Zoologists have a high demand among fisheries and aqua farms, wildlife parks and nature reserves, research companies, institutional academies, botanical gardens, and environmental preservation agencies. Both the government and private districts have jobs available for zoologists in their spheres.
The Department offers MS program in Zoology which has been designed to address the future challenges to our World and preparing the graduates to help in identifying and suggesting solutions for either stopping or at least slowing down the process of rapid change taking place. The program aims to develop researchers to serve in universities, Institutes for ecology, environmental agencies, healthcare, molecular biology, conservation & forest management, climate change, scientific publishing, public education (zoos, museums, nature reserves, scientific societies etc.), biomedical sciences, diagnosing genetic disorders, National Institute of Oceanography, Wildlife Conservation and Management, Public and Private Sectors, Forensic Department, Environmental Institutions and Pathological Laboratories.
